Fishing around Central East Holland - Overijssel, Dalfsen and Harderwick
The IJssel is a vast and powerful river that may seem intimidating at first, but focusing on the margins can yield impressive catches of large bream, hybrids, roach, and ide. This waterway is best tackled with feeder or pole fishing and is one of the rare locations where barbel can be found. Don’t be discouraged by its size and strong current—targeting areas just off the main flow and introducing plenty of feed into your swim will attract the abundant shoals of coarse fish.
In contrast, the Vechte offers a gentler fishing experience with excellent coarse fishing opportunities. Depending on the flow, methods such as waggler, pole, stick, and feeder fishing can all be highly effective. Like any river, the Vechte thrives on a steady flow, and the surrounding area offers numerous backwaters and still waters to explore in a picturesque setting.
Harderwijk provides a diverse fishing experience with an extensive network of canals—both large and small—as well as a variety of still waters. This area offers excellent coarse fishing away from the crowds and is conveniently located about 90 minutes from the ports. As with most waters in the Netherlands, these areas tend to have a natural colour to them, encouraging fish to feed closer to the bank. Using ground bait enriched with plenty of particles is highly effective.
Pre-baiting lakes and canals can enhance your success, while frequent and generous feeding is crucial during the warmer months on rivers. Stewed wheat serves as an affordable and effective bulk feed, and chopped worm is an essential addition when targeting bream.
