Fishing in Co Roscommon

Co. Roscommon is known for its tranquil waters and diverse fish populations. Whether you’re fishing from the bank or from a boat the lakes, rivers and canals of this region provide excellent opportunities for anglers of all levels.

Connecting Lough Key to the River Shannon, the Boyle River offers great coarse fishing. It has big shoals of bream and roach during the spring and the Boyle Canal has easy access and its own resident roach, hybrids, bream, and tench. The areas around the Lough Key Forest Park offer excellent shore fishing opportunities for bream, roach, perch, pike and hybrids.

The 'must fish' lake is Lough Gara, located near the border with Co. Sligo. This scenic lough is known for its variety of fish species and tranquil setting. The north shore has good pike fishing with various access points and clear shorelines making it ideal for both bank and boat fishing. The south shore has deeper waters which are ideal for bream and larger pike. Numerous islands within the lough provide excellent fishing spots, particularly for perch and pike. Accessing these by boat can yield productive fishing away from more crowded areas.

Roosky is nicely poised on the banks of the River Shannon at the hub of some of Ireland's best coarse fishing - an area where you will catch quality rudd, mighty tench, bream, roach, hybrids and pike. The river in Roosky itself has featured prominently in angling reports based on big bream hauls. Roosky is also home to the Lakeland Fisheries - a commercial complex that even has carp.

Lanesborough also provides excellent opportunities for coarse anglers. The warm water stretch near the ESB power station is particularly renowned for its abundance of fish. It is easily accessible from the bank, with designated fishing stands available. The water warmed by the outflow from the power station, attracts fish, especially in colder months. Lough Ree located downstream of Lanesborough is a large lake ideal for boat fishing. Focus on the sheltered bays and reed beds around the lake fishing for bream, roach, perch, pike and tench. The northern shores near Portrunny and Lecarrow are especially good for coarse fishing.

River Suck flowing through the counties of Roscommon and Galway is known for its serene surroundings. Ballyforan is a popular spot with good fishing for bream, roach, perch and pike. Look for deeper pools and areas with natural cover. Castlecoote has quieter fishing spots. Fish along the riverbanks and near overhanging trees for perch and tench.

Spring and Summer are the best times for coarse fishing, with warmer water temperatures encouraging fish activity. Early mornings and late evenings are particularly productive. Autumn can also be productive, especially for pike as they feed heavily before winter. In Winter fishing is still possible, though activity levels may decrease. Focus on deeper waters where fish tend to congregate. Wherever you fish in Ireland, the chances of catching fish are hugely improved by pre-baiting to attract fish into your chosen swim. Ideally this is done the evening before (or for a couple of days) using breadcrumb or local maize meal carrying particle baits such as sweetcorn, boiled wheat, hemp and pellets. Early morning and late evening are generally more productive as fish tend to feed more actively during these times.
