The Alentejo region of Portugal is home to the Alqueva Dam, which is Europe's largest man-made dam, standing on the viewpoint at the medieval village of Monsaraz. Within the dam are carp, Wels catfish, channel catfish, crucian hybrids, black bass, barbel, zander, bleak and probably some hidden surprises.

Night fishing for carp is now allowed in certain areas. There are a number of other dams that can be fished in the area too.

The Rio Guadiana is home for five types of barbel, wild carp, shad, mullet, largemouth bass and zander.

There is lots to enjoy in the Alentejo region other than rivers and fish - the stunning scenery, the wildlife, the delicious food and drink and the friendly people.
