Fishing Facts by Dave Lewis..
Primarily Belize is a fly fishing destination, though there are opportunities for light to medium spin casting in several jungle rivers and coral reefs, for various species including tarpon and snook. For this I recommend a Shimano Beastmaster STC 4-piece spinning rod or similar, rated to cast lures between 10-60g. A 4000 size fixed spool reel loaded with around 20-30lbBS PowerPro completes the outfit. Carry a varied selection of lures being sure to include a few surface poppers such as the Rapala Skitter Pop. The sort of lures typically used for perch, zander and small to medium sized pike will be perfect.
An 8wt is the best ‘all-round’ fly rod for Belize, matched to a good saltwater grade fly reel complete with a weight forward Tropical fly line. This rod will be perfect for bonefish, snook and small permit, but I also carry a lighter 7wt for use on very calm days. When targeting permit and small tarpon a 10wt is recommended, while a heavier 12wt will be necessary if you plan on casting to large tarpon.
For bonefish all of the usual shrimp imitations such as Charlie’s, Gotcha’s, Bonefish Specials and small crab patterns work well. Crab imitations such as the Merkin and Bauer crab are a good choice for permit, while Clouser Minnow’s, Gummy Minnow’s, E.P. Minnow’s and classic Cockroach flies all work for tarpon. Most of the guides carry a small selection of ‘favourite flies’. Of course you’ll also need leader/tippet material and I always suggest carrying a few spare lines and backing.
