World Class fly fishing for bonefish, permit and tarpon. Excellent lure fishing for snook and a variety of jacks.
Belize, with its extensive Caribbean coastline and hundreds of cayes (islands), offers excellent opportunities for sea fishing. Its unique location, right next to the second-largest barrier reef in the world (the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System), ensures a diverse and abundant marine life, making it a dream destination for anglers from around the world.
The waters around Belize are teeming with game fish, including marlin, sailfish, dorado (mahi-mahi), wahoo, and tuna offshore; barracuda, kingfish, snapper, grouper and jacks nearshore and bonefish, tarpon, and permit on the flats.
Belize is particularly famous for its Grand Slam fishing, which is catching a bonefish, tarpon, and permit all in one day.
General Seasons:
Bonefish are caught year round. Permit fishing is better in Winter/Spring/Summer. Tarpon are somewhat migratory with the better fishing being from April to August. The prime months for a Grand Slam is June, July and August. Snook can be caught year round in the quieter backwater and mangrove channels.
Placencia, in southern Belize is our chosen destination and is known for its excellent inshore and offshore fishing. To maximise on the quality of fishing here a guide and boat is essential. We offer resort style accommodation with access to knowledgeable fly fishing guides. Top local guides are familiar with the current rule and regulations and know the best fishing spots, the tides and will provide fishing equipment if needed.
Superb on-site facilities and great fishing close by.
Primarily Belize is a fly fishing destination, though there are opportunities for light to medium spin casting in several jungle rivers and coral reefs. For this, we recommend a Shimano Beastmaster STC 4-piece spinning rod or similar, rated to cast lures between 10-60g. A 4000 size fixed spool reel loaded with around 20-30lb, BS PowerPro completes the outfit.
Carry a varied selection of lures being sure to include a few surface poppers such as the Rapala Skitter Pop. The sort of lures typically used for perch, zander and small to medium-sized pike will be perfect. An 8wt is the best ‘all-round’ fly rod for Belize, matched to a good saltwater grade fly reel complete with a weight forward Tropical fly line. This rod will be perfect for bonefish, snook and small permit, but a lighter 7wt can be used on very calm days. When targeting permit and small tarpon a 10wt is recommended, while a heavier 12wt will be necessary if you plan on casting to large tarpon.
For bonefish all of the usual shrimp imitations such as Charlie’s, Gotcha’s, Bonefish Specials and small crab patterns work well. Crab imitations such as the Merkin and Bauer crab are a good choice for permit, while Clouser Minnow’s, Gummy Minnow’s, E.P. Minnow’s and classic Cockroach flies all work for tarpon. Most of the guides carry a small selection of favourite flies. Of course, you’ll also need leader/tippet material and a few spare lines and backing.
