Stunning mountains some snow capped all year round, huge glaciers and crystal clear rivers and lakes. Quiet roads and scenic countryside. Take the east to west coast route via Arthurs Pass for amazing views. The West coast has amazing beaches and is the least crowded of all coasts. In the south east the Otago Peninsular will impress too. Empty wide open beaches where you should see huge sea lions and in the north the unique Royal Albatross breeding sanctuary.

Scenic mountains and valleys, huge glaciers, highland plains, crystal clear rivers and isolated lakes. A week and you can cover most of the major sights in a rush, two weeks and it becomes a more rewarding and leisurely tour.

Visit Haast through the Haast Pass to Wanaka and Queenstown. Te Anau is a must stay location ideal for a day out to Milford Sound. If you have time drive up the north east coast from Christchurch to Kaikora on the north east coast. Lots of fur seals, stunning rugged coastline and great whale watching excursions. Perfect for sightseeing and exploring. A wide range of B&B's, apartments and good value hotels.

Fly fishing for wild brown trout and rainbow trout in a pristine environment. One freshwater fishing licence covers both islands for a year. Great value. Guided fishing is ideal for the first day or two in a new location. Access to most water is free with the land owners permission. With a huge choice of creeks, rivers and streams there is a lot of easy access to good fly fishing. Some larger lakes will require a boat and therefore guide to access the better sport but well worthwhile.

I personally prefer to hire a 4 wheel drive vehicle and that provides a high level of comfort and gives me easier access to most waters.
