Located 3.5 hours’ drive northwest of the capital San Jose, Samara is a small, quaint and friendly resort on the Pacific Ocean. Full of character this small resort offers a good choice of restaurants and bars. An excellent base for enjoying the unexploited fishing in this unspoilt region of Costa Rica.
Accommodation is at the hotel Loma Linda Lodge, a friendly place with comfortable rooms all air-conditioned. Breakfast and packed lunch whilst fishing are included.
Boats are either the Boston Whaler or the smaller Contender boat and feature a Bimini top sun cover plus all necessary navigation and safety equipment. Tackle can be supplied for a nominal fee, but must be pre-booked.
Boston Whaler 320 Outrage has a super equipped (radar, GPS, latest generation depth sounder), tuna tubes, live well and toilets and is a world benchmark for safety and comfort. The cruising speed of 30 knots, allows you to reach the fishing areas in 30 minutes.
Contender 28 is a streamlined boat that offers perfect fishing comfort for the coast (GPS, depth sounder, tuna tubes, live well, toilets). Sleek front casting platform for 4 anglers.
Fishing: For casting and jigging - fish inshore along rocks and over features up to 30 miles on the south of Samara and 30 miles to the North. There are more than 4,000gps fishing spots for inshore fishing. Fish for cubera, roosterfish, jacks, amberjack, and dorado. There is no marina, which means there are very few boats and low fishing pressure!
Offshore fishing is also available for larger species like sailfish, marlin, dorado (mahi mahi) and yellowfin tuna. Yellowfin tuna arrive November to December and again in May. Fishing hours - 07:00 to 16:00. Closed September and October (heavy rains).
Access: A choice of flights but the British Airways direct flight is an excellent option.
Getting There: You will be met and collected from San Jose Airport or from your hotel if you have booked one night's accommodation in San Jose. After a three and half hour drive in an air-conditioned van with beverages, you will arrive at your hotel in Samara on the Pacific Coast.
