The Three Kings and Princess Group of islands are rocky, uninhabited islands located about 55km northwest of Cape Reinga, the northernmost point of New Zealand. The area is known for its deep-sea fishing opportunities due to the presence of underwater canyons and abundant marine biodiversity. They are a popular destination for anglers targeting species such as Yellowtail Kingfish, Marlin, Broadbill Swordfish, Wreckfish, Tuna and Trevally.

Due to the remote location trips are completely live aboard. Boats depart from Mangonui in the far north of New Zealand.

2024 Fishing Report:
“We booked a 7 day live aboard charter to fish the world famous Three King Islands, this is the place where you can catch the biggest Yellow Tail King Fish in the world!
The scenery in this part of the world is breath-taking, the sea was alive with dolphins, birds, turtles, squid, crayfish, sharks and fish.

The Yellow Tail King Fish has got to be one of the hardest fighting fish in the sea especially in shallow water fishing over reefs, your fishing tackle gets tested to the maximum when using 15kg of drag pressure and 40kg braid on the reel, this is strong enough to take you off your feet if you are not ready for the bite! Andy caught the biggest at 35kg followed by Tony with one at 32kg, we all had them over 25kg each day with most fish averaging 18kg to 20kg.

At times we lost some good fish to big sharks feeding on fish we hooked, the skipper said it’s mostly Mako Sharks and Bronze Whaler Sharks in the area, so each day when the sharks turned up we changed tactics and put a shark rod out and we weren’t disappointed. We managed to catch 4 Bronze Whaler Sharks to 350lb, 1 Mako Shark 110lb, 3 Great White Sharks to 800lb.
We actually hooked 7 Great White Sharks but pulled the hook on 4 of them as we only use barbless circle hooks that do minimal damage to the sharks.

The highlight of the trip was when Andy was fighting an 800lb Great White Shark on the bow of the boat and Tony was fighting a 110lb Mako Shark on the stern of the boat at the same time while at anchor! The skipper said in 30 years of being a skipper in New Zealand he has never seen anyone catch a Great White Shark and has only ever seen a few of them, he could not believe how many were in the area!

The deep water bottom fishing for Bass, Puka and Bluenose was good once we found a feeding shoal, sadly we didn’t get into the monster bass that go over 70kg but we were happy to just experience it.

The Snapper and Trevally fishing was excellent sport in the crystal clear water, at times we could see big shoals following up the fish we hooked.

On the way back to port the water temperature was perfect for Marlin fishing, I was first up and got a screaming run that turned out to be a Mako Shark on the Marlin lure this was my first Mako Shark so I was very happy to tick it off the list.

Everyone on this trip had an amazing time and cannot wait for their next fishing adventure with us. We will be going back to New Zealand in January or February 2025 we are just waiting to confirm dates, if you would like to join us please let us know and we will give you all the information.”
