We offer an atmosphere so natural and wild that both George Mason University and The Smithsonian Institute are going to be conducting classes from our lodge. Wonderful jungle river lodge on the edge of the Caribbean. Eco friendly with superb facilities and top guides that cater for lure, fly and bait fishing. Big tarpon a speciality.
Rio Indio Lodge stocks a wide selection of fishing tackle, so in reality there is no need to carry anything.
For jungle fishing targeting rainbow bass, machaca, guapote and snook I recommend a Shimano Beastmaster STC 4-piece spinning rod or similar, rated to cast lures between 10-60g. A 4000 size fixed spool reel loaded with around 20-30lbBS PowerPro completes the outfit. Carry a varied selection of lures being sure to include a few surface poppers such as the Rapala Skitter Pop. The sort of lures typically used for perch, zander and small to medium sized pike will be perfect, especially those that are ‘weedless’ as often you will be fishing amongst thick growths of weed. Freshwater bass style spinner baits are very effective for rainbow bass, while diving plugs featuring a ball bearing rattle such as the Rattlin Rapala are excellent for river snook
Offshore tarpon and big jack crevalle are the main species, and these are caught using either live baits or jigs. My rod of choice here is a Shimano 20-30lb 4-Piece boat rod, matched with a reel such as a Shimano TLD15 loaded with either 30lbBS monofilament or around 50lbBS PowerPro braid, both should be rigged with a 20ft 80-100lb shock leader. Circle hooks are best, depending on the size of bait available I use between 4/0 and 8/0 Owner hooks. Bucktail jigs and plain lead head jigs rigged with soft plastic lures are also very effective for tarpon; I have personally seen them out fish livebait. A selection of different size jig heads from 2-6oz will be needed, make sure they are made using strong, sharp, reliable hooks.
PASSPORTS
Ensure your passport is valid for your trip. Most destinations insist that your passport must have an expiry date at least 6 months after your return flight. It is important that you check both your issue date and expiry date on your passport. If you have renewed your passport early in the past, the passport office could have added these extra months to your expiry date. Some countries, particularly in the EU, do not recognise these extra months. You should assume that your passport validity is 10 years from the date of issue.
