Located on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast in the province of Guanacaste, Samara is one of the country’s premier destinations for sport fishing enthusiasts. Samara is a charming coastal resort, renowned for its sheltered bay, long sandy beach, and relaxed atmosphere. The town also offers a good selection of restaurants, bars, and local amenities, making it an ideal destination for anglers and non-anglers alike.
Transfers: The journey from San Jose International Airport to Samara takes approximately 3.5 hours. For guests arriving on late flights, overnight accommodation near the airport can be arranged, with a transfer to Samara the following day. Additional nights can also be added to your itinerary if required.
Your fishing adventure takes place aboard a purpose-built sport fishing boat, ideally equipped for both inshore and offshore excursions. Powered by a reliable 200hp Yamaha engine, the vessel features modern navigation electronics, including GPS and a Garmin fish finder/depth sounder, along with full safety equipment, rod holders, fighting harnesses, and all the essential gear needed for trolling and casting. The result is a safe, comfortable, and rewarding day on the water.
The boat is skippered by a Samara-born captain and experienced fishing guide whose exceptional knowledge of the local waters has been gained over a lifetime of fishing the area. Accompanied by his trusted crew member, both are passionate anglers dedicated to finding the most productive fishing grounds and ensuring you enjoy the very best sport fishing experience.
Target Species
Depending on the season and prevailing sea conditions, anglers can expect to target an impressive variety of Pacific game fish. Species regularly encountered include roosterfish, cubera snapper, Pacific sailfish, blue, black and striped marlin, yellowfin tuna, mahi-mahi (dorado), wahoo, trevally, grouper, amberjack, Spanish mackerel and a range of snapper species.
Fishing Techniques
Samara offers outstanding opportunities to enjoy all the major tropical sport fishing techniques. Depending on the target species and conditions, fishing methods include offshore trolling, light trolling, popping, stick baiting, jigging and slow jigging.
Trolling tackle is included as standard, while additional casting, spinning, jigging and popping equipment can be hired locally. Anglers are also welcome to bring their own tackle if preferred.

Samara offers excellent fishing throughout the year, making it an ideal destination regardless of the season.
November to May – Dry Season
Traditionally regarded as the peak fishing season, this period brings calmer seas and more stable weather, providing comfortable conditions and easy access to offshore fishing grounds.
June to November – Green Season
Although occasional tropical showers are more common during the green season, fishing remains excellent for a wide range of species. With fewer visitors, this time of year also offers a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere both on and off the water.
