Description
Kodiak is the second largest island in Alaska and is home to over 4,000 brown bears (the world’s largest bears) Ursus Arctos Middendorffi a subspecies of the brown bear. These huge bears get on with their lives of surviving, minding their own business and feeding on the rich supply of grasses, seasonal berries and salmon.
Guided by Dick Rohrer one of the most experienced fly fishing and wildlife guides on Kodiak Island.
All our accommodation/guided fishing packages require 1 night in Anchorage and 1 night in Kodiak City outbound and the same inbound. That adds 4 nights to your wilderness camp package which is generally 6 or 7 nights. Extended stays are possible.
Dicks Camp, Little River.
Accessible only by helicopter. A unique location with total wilderness isolation on the west coast of Kodiak Island. Dick Rohrer is the owner guide at this stunningly located setting with magnificent views over the Little River, sea pool and the Shelikof Straight with views to the mainland of Alaska.
Kodiak bears are occasionally seen strolling along the beach, grazing in the opposite “meadow” and hunting salmon in Little River. A small group of sea lions patrol the waters just off the Little River outflow, waiting for the salmon to run. Bald eagles eagerly await the autumn salmon runs too. Pinks and Sockeye are the first to migrate into the river heading a short distance to a small lake.
Fly fishing here using an 8 weight rod is excellent for the September Coho runs with bright silver fish in the 8 to 20 pound class. Occasional steelhead to 8 pounds are caught too. Most of the fly fishing takes place in the tidal lagoon just before the Little River meanders down into the ocean. Every incoming tide brings in more and more fresh hard fighting silver fish.
Streamer (Klauser) and surface action flies (pollywogs) produce amazing sport. Its catch and release (single barbless hooks). We take the occasional Coho salmon for dinner which makes great eating.
Accommodation is in the main comfortable cabin at the top of the hill overlooking the river/lagoon. It’s warm and this is also where you eat. Dick has a small cabin adjacent.
Our Kodiak Wilderness camps are exactly that. Toilets are “long drop dunnies” dug out each season. No flush toilets here as its back to basics. Toilet paper is supplied and you have great views! Take biodegradable wet wipes with you as there are no showers. This is true outdoor wilderness living.
Access into this camp is only by helicopter from Kodiak City and therefore exclusivity of the area is guaranteed.
